Selling or closing a structural practice
Structural engineering firm for sale: the job files on their own
Updated
Years of calculations and analysis models are rarely priced in a sale of the practice. They can be licensed on their own, and the firm keeps the copyright.
Ask about our job files Copyright is rarely the obstacle for a structural firm; client confidences are. Describe the job files and we will answer in writing about your own work.
Before the sale
A sale moves the job files to a new owner; the client confidences attached to them still have to be dealt with before any of them is licensed. The people who ran the jobs know which ones were confidential, which is why the cleaning is done before or beside the sale.
What can happen to the job files
- Kept and licensed
- The office carries on and licenses calculations and models it authored, with client details removed.
- Licensed in the wind-down
- A structural office that is closing has its directors or administrator license the job files.
- Handed to a partner
- On the office's written say-so, a partner better suited to the job files is introduced.
What to remove
Client names, site addresses, seals and anything delivered under a confidentiality clause come out first. Then tell us about the files through the enquiry form.
